Editor’s Corner
Dear changemaker,
World Breastfeeding Week has left me with a mix of emotions—excitement and anger at the patriarchy and misogyny that still linger. It's disheartening to witness instances like the Kenyan National Assembly removing Zuleikha Hassan for bringing her baby to parliament simply because she couldn't find other arrangements. However, her bold decision has been instrumental in Kenya's journey towards achieving the exclusive breastfeeding rate SDG target for 2030.
In this week of celebration, I want to honour the incredible women who champion women's issues just by being themselves. Nouhaila Benzina, the first person to wear a hijab during a World Cup match, inspires female athletes globally. Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, challenges societal gender norms through her thought-provoking conversations and parallels in the summer hit movie.
And then, there's you. Reading this newsletter, you play a vital role in the conversation and stories needed to pave the way for a different course for women worldwide.
At the beginning of this week, I felt frustrated with the slow progress of gender equality. But now, thanks to women like Zuleikha and Nouhaila, I'm filled with hope and optimism, realizing how far we've come.
Together, we can continue to make a difference and empower women everywhere.
With hope and determination,
Chidera Muoka,
Editor-In-Chief
